Water Safety Symposium: Emerging Contaminants and Innovative Approaches to Water Purification

The Water Safety Symposium: Emerging Contaminants and Innovative Approaches to Water Purification, held from 6 to 8 May 2026 in Benasque, gathered 40 researchers and professionals interested in current challenges related to water safety, emerging contaminants and innovative purification strategies. ARAID researchers Filomena Silva and Jonas Gurauskis were members of both the Scientific Committee and the Organising Committee, contributing to the design of the scientific programme and the coordination of the event.

The scientific programme was structured around thematic sessions focusing on water resources and scarcity; emerging contaminants such as microplastics, PFAS and pharmaceutical residues; advanced materials for water purification; smart devices and sensors for water quality monitoring; and sustainable and energy-efficient approaches.

The symposium featured invited speakers of international prestige, including Stefania Federici (University of Brescia, Italy), Blanca Serrano (ECETOC, Brussels), Sara Rojas Macías (University of Granada, Spain), Eva C. Sonnenschein (Swansea University, United Kingdom), Patrick Allard (University of California, Los Angeles -UCLA), Vicctor Candelario (University of Sevilla) and Enrique Navarro (Pyrenean Institute of Ecology).

The symposium aimed to explore recent advances in materials science, engineering and technology applied to water safety; address challenges related to emerging contaminants and the global water crisis; and foster collaboration between academia and industry.
