New emission-reduction strategies highlighted at the Adria-Danube Combustion Meeting 2026

Research on sustainable combustion brought together European specialists at the Adria-Danube Combustion Meeting 2026, held on 1–2 September in Budapest (Hungary). During the meeting, ARAID researcher Hans-Heinrich Carstensen presented a lecture on updates to a kinetic model for ammonia and methane oxidation in advanced combustion systems.

The Adria-Danube Combustion Meeting 2026 brought together researchers from several European countries working in gas-phase chemistry and combustion science. The meeting provided a forum for presenting recent scientific advances through lectures and poster sessions focused on the chemical processes that underpin more efficient and sustainable energy technologies.

Within this framework, Hans-Heinrich Carstensen delivered the lecture “An Updated Kinetic Model for Ammonia/Methane Oxidation in O2/N2 or O2/CO2”, presenting research aimed at improving the description of oxidation processes involving ammonia and methane mixtures.

The work presented is linked to one of the approaches currently being explored to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from industrial combustion systems: replacing conventional air with oxygen/carbon dioxide mixtures. This strategy facilitates the capture of CO2 generated during combustion and supports its subsequent storage or utilisation through CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage) technologies.

In addition to presenting recent research results, participation in the meeting provided opportunities to exchange ideas with international experts and strengthen collaborations in a scientific field that plays an important role in the development of lower-emission and more environmentally sustainable energy solutions.
