Perovskino receives an award for a science outreach initiative on solar energy and energy storage
ARAID researcher Emilio J. Juárez‑Pérez has received recognition in the 2026 Call for Outreach Activities and Citizen Science Projects Awards of the Energy and Sustainability Specialised Group (GEEN-RSEQ). The awarded initiative, “The Death Star Powered by the Sun: Photobatteries at Researchers’ Night 2025”, received €300 in funding to support its development.
The awarded project aims to bring the concept of photobatteries closer to the public. This emerging technology combines solar energy harvesting and storage within a single device. The proposal was submitted to the outreach awards organised by the Energy and Sustainability Specialised Group of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ), which highlighted the originality of the initiative.
The activity is based on Perovskino, an open-source and low-cost instrument developed by Emilio J. Juárez‑Pérez at the Open Solar Stability Lab (INMA, CSIC–University of Zaragoza) to measure and monitor the stability of perovskite solar cells. This technology is considered one of the most promising developments in photovoltaics and aims to improve the efficiency and viability of future sustainable energy solutions.
Beyond its scientific value, Perovskino represents a successful example of knowledge transfer. The technology has been published in specialised scientific journals and is currently progressing towards commercial development through entrepreneurship and technology-transfer programmes at the University of Zaragoza.
This award highlights the importance of science outreach as a tool for bringing research closer to society and encouraging public interest in technologies that can help address future energy challenges.
