New archaeological prospection methodologies presented at the 45th International Symposium on Archaeometry

ARAID researcher Jorge Angás participated in the 45th International Symposium on Archaeometry, held from 18 to 22 May 2026 in Turin, where he presented a scientific communication on new archaeological prospection methodologies applied to the site of Zar Tepe (Uzbekistan).

During the symposium, Jorge Angas presented an integrated archaeological prospection approach combining satellite remote sensing, UAV-based survey, geophysical techniques and high-precision GNSS positioning, applied to the study of the fortified site of Zar Tepe in sourthern Uzbekistan, linked to ancient trade routes in Central Asia.

The research, developed in collaboration with an international team, made it possible to reconstruct the urban organisation of the site prior to excavation, identify residential and productive areas, and document previously unknown structures such as ceramic kilns and craft-production spaces. The integration of historical data, multiscale analysis and field verification demonstrated the effectiveness of this methodology in improving archaeological interpretation and heritage management.

The International Symposium on Archaeometry is one of the leading international forums dedicated to the application of scientific techniques to the study of archaeological heritage, regularly bringing together the scientific community specialising in archaeometry, geophysics and advanced materials analysis.

ARAID's participation in this congress strengthens the international visibility of research carried out in Aragon and its contribution to innovative approaches in the study and conservation of archaeological heritage.
