Research Manager Forum brings together research management professionals from across Spain in Zaragoza

Zaragoza hosted the Research Manager Forum on 28 October, an event promoted by Campus Iberus and sponsored by ARAID that brought together research management professionals, institutional representatives and national and international experts to reflect on the present and future of a profession that is becoming increasingly important within the research and innovation ecosystem.

Research management has become a strategic function within universities, research centres and public administrations, supporting funding acquisition, project development, grant management and scientific collaboration. In this context, the Research Manager Forum provided an opportunity to exchange experiences, analyse emerging trends and strengthen professional networks at both national and international levels.

The programme addressed several topics that are expected to shape the future of the sector. Guillermo Álvarez, Head of the Social Challenges Department within the EU Programmes Directorate at CDTI, shared perspectives on the transition towards the next European Framework Programme for research and innovation funding. Ignasi Salvadó, Managing Director of the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA), discussed the current strategic priorities in research management.

Emerging technologies also featured prominently during the event. Hillary Cronin, Strategic Research Funding Coordinator at Munster Technological University in Ireland, presented experiences on the use of artificial intelligence tools to support research management and funding activities.

Another key session focused on the professionalisation of research management careers and the role of professional networks. Participants included Cristina Borrás Sardà, Director of the International Area at AGAUR and representative of the CORMES network; Silvia Ojer Torres, Director of the European Projects Office of the Government of Navarra; and Óscar López Lorente, current Director of ARAID. The discussion explored regional initiatives aimed at strengthening professional recognition, supporting career development and fostering collaboration among institutions.

In addition to the strategic and technical sessions, the programme included a networking space that encouraged the exchange of experiences and the establishment of new professional connections among participants from different organisations. The strong participation highlighted the growing recognition of research management as a key function in promoting scientific excellence, facilitating access to competitive funding and strengthening institutional collaboration.
