The Spanish network in scanning probes microscopies (SPMnet) aims to bring together the expertise and knowledge in advanced SPMs of well establish and young research groups in Spain, to tackle the most important problems in the characterization of the matter at the nanoscale. All these problems will be addressed through a transversal consortium, gathering interdisciplinary groups from experimentalists to theoreticians in wide range of research fields, from material science to biology.
The SPMnet is formed by 13 groups focused on the investigation of novel materials and surfaces at the nanoscale including on-surface synthesis of nanomaterials from molecular precursors, 2D materials properties and its chemical functionalization, superconductivity, the tip-induced electroluminescence of molecules and surfaces, the structure-function-properties interplay of biological materials, the imaging of magnetic nanostructures, or topological surface states in quantum materials.
Among the planned actions, we aim to promote communication between the different research groups (e.g. creation of an email list and organization of research meetings), to promote R&D activities and contribute to the advancement of knowledge (e.g. organization of a summer school Recent Advances in SPMs), to face the challenges of Spanish research at national and international level and to increase the interest of society in nanoscience and SPMs (e.g. organization of an SPM images contest and outreach activities).
