NURTURING ADAPTIVE NEXUS-ROBUST WATER-RELATED POLICIES

ANexPo will address interdependencies across current and emerging water-related policies (e.g. agriculture and food, energy production, ecosystem conservation, transport). We will identify ways to streamline and transform such policies to ensure that these interdependencies are effectively taken into account in policy-making and policy implementation under different global change scenarios.
ANexPo will design, test and disseminate an iterative and adaptive policy-making protocol to enable the design of water-related policies that fit the complexity of socio-hydrological systems.
Such a policy-making approach requires a structured and flexible suite of modelling tools and participatory policy simulations as will be developed within ANexPo. This will improve the manner in which interdependencies are identified and enable future pathways to be explored hand-in hand with stakeholders. Transition thinking as well as a renewed set of indicators will sustain ex ante scenario exploration as well as implementation monitoring plan. These indicators will combine two categories: sectoral efficiency, and robustness to external changes and nexus interdependencies.
ANexPo will use a set of six contrasting multi-scale transboundary case studies to test the new protocol and the accompanying tools. Implementing a new approach to water-related policy-making requires engagement and commitment from all stakeholders. For this reason, ANexPo has put active stakeholder engagement and co-creation research at the heart of its methodology both in the research and in the experimental case studies.
