Innovation, growth and sustainability: approximation from multiregional, evolutionary and dynamic models

The United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development (2015) settles 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which call for action to promote growth while meeting social needs and protecting the environment. This is also the commitment of the EU which, in its Europe 2020 Strategy, is committed to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth by overcoming structural deficiencies of European economies, increasing productivity and competitiveness, consolidating a social economy, and reducing pressures on the environment. This strategy places innovation, efficiency in resource allocation, building up a strong industrial base compatible with nature, and advancing towards social and territorial cohesion as its main fields of action.
In the present globalized economy, it is clear that achieving sustainable and inclusive growth requires, at various geographic, sectoral and social levels, the analysis and promotion of innovation, the monitoring of international firm dynamics and institutional changes, as well as the analytical integration of the economic, social, environmental and territorial vectors in new models. These are the fundamental goals of the project we hereby propose.

The project results will allow us to set up complementary sustainable growth scenarios aimed at improving the economic, technological and environmental conditions of society.
From a methodological point of view, the project draws on the analytical combination of Multisectoral-Multiregional Models (and their extensions as social and environmentally extended MRIO, Social Accounting Matrices and Applied General Equilibrium Models), and Complex Evolutionary Models (Evolutionary Games, non-linear dynamics, Network models and ABMs) tailored to our research goals. From an empirical point of view, we will focus our modelling applications on Spain, as well as on the European Union and the Mediterranean Area, fundamental geographical frameworks for the Spanish economy. Let us note that our team has worked for more than two decades with this methodologies and it has implemented applications in these contexts.

The results have been published in well-known international journals meeting high scientific standards. In the current project, we seek to conduct research towards the aforementioned fundamental goals, following four clear lines:
Line 1: Structural and technological change in the new international context. Industrial and sectoral policies and strategies.
Line 2: Social and environmental impacts of growth, income distribution, and the evaluation of these aspects at different scales.
Line 3: Innovation and inclusive growth in multisectoral dynamic models.
Line 4: Evaluation of the compatibility of economic, social and environmental goals and design of scenarios for alternative technological conditions, demand profiles and institutional structures.
